Adam Azim says his super lightweight fight with Ohara Davies on Saturday lives on Sky Sportsis his “toughest test” to date, but one he really wants to get into the ring for.
The 22-year-old has an undefeated record of 11-0 in his career so far, won eight wins by knockout and simultaneously won and defended the European title in record time.
In Davies, Azim faces a fighter a decade older than him and a former British and Commonwealth champion who holds a professional record of 25-3, with 18 victories in the round of 16.
After Friday’s weigh-in – where Azim came in 10th and Davies in 9th with 13 pounds – and the two went head-to-head, Azim said Sky Sports: “Naturally [it will be my toughest test]100 percent. I’ve always said it.
“Every fight is a tough test, so let’s go ahead and do this.”
“I’m really excited for this fight. I still have my Nokia phone with me! That’s how focused I am right now.”
“I’m doing really well, I feel normal. I lightened the weight.”
“It’s going to be a great fight and I really had a great camp. I feel good, I’m positive and I’m just itching to get in the ring.”
Azim hopes to become world champion in the 140-pound class in the coming years, but must first defeat Davies, who wants to halt his opponent’s career momentum.
“It will be a very good fight. What more can I say?” Davies said Sky Sports.
“I worked hard, Adam worked hard, we had a good camp and it was good preparation. We’re both ready to go.”
“I enjoyed some of it. I enjoyed it very much. It’s great to be back on Sky Sports – I haven’t been on Sky for four years now!”
“I’m back and I always enjoyed these fights on Sky.”
On the undercard, British duo Dan Azeez and Lewis Edmondson came 12th weighing 6lb and 12st 6lb 5oz respectively, while another Brit, Anthony Yarde, came 12th weighing 11lb against Latvian opponent Ralfs Vilcans , who weighed 12st 9 pounds 5 ounces
Dalton Smith: Azim will be too sharp but Davies is not finished | My fight against Azim will take place
Azim previously said he believes he can prove himself as a world-class player against Davies and is eyeing high-profile clashes with Harlem Eubank and Dalton Smith in 2025.
In conversation with Sky SportsSmith said: “I think this is it [Smith vs Azim] will always happen. It is in high demand. Obviously I asked for it this year. I’m ready for it. I was ready at any time. But it takes two to tango.
“If a fight is in high demand, that makes sense. We could get him at a big event.”
“The fight will definitely happen.”
On his prediction for Azim against Davies, Smith added: “Every fight is dangerous. Of course it was a good pairing.”
“Adam needed an opponent like that because he withdrew from my fight [for the European title]In order to never make it to the Harlem Eubank fight, he couldn’t have brought a no-name into the game. He always had to get a bigger name for his next fight.
“I still think it’s a great fight. I don’t think Ohara Davies is a washed out fighter at all. He got him out of there within five rounds.
“Of course it is a dangerous fight. Ohara can hit too.”
