The Track World Championships are delivering good results and yesterday we saw Jonathan Milan and Britain’s Josh Charlton beat Filippo Ganna’s previous world record in the individual pursuit. After a brilliant breakthrough season away from home, Milan have now added a World Cup title to their palmarès with a strong win in Denmark.
“Since qualifying I have tried to do my best. Before the final I wasn’t so sure if I would make it. “Charlton’s time was incredible and I can still believe I beat him,” Milan said in a post-race interview. “I was just thinking about the route and the table that we had given ourselves with the technical commissioner Marco Villa. Maybe I started too fast, but at that point I couldn’t slow down anymore and pushed until the end. I wasn’t thinking. I was going to break the record in the sense that bringing home gold wasn’t the main goal. However, against such an opponent I had to do something extraordinary.”
3:59.636 was the time Ganna set two years ago, but the field is constantly evolving. 3:59.159 was the time set by the Lidl Trek rider last night, which earned him a great gold medal, completed by Brits on the podium. Milan continues to show that its pure power is an advantage not only on the road, but also on the Palmarès track.
Italy coach Marco Villa also commented on the incredible achievement: “It would have been really hard to lose two world records in the same year that we thought were ours. Jonathan deserves the praise of all Italian sport. When Charlton lowered Ganna’s limit with an incredible performance, he didn’t lose his composure. He aimed for victory and also the world record. It is the reward for a boy who grew up compared to Ganna without ever becoming demoralized.”
