Canada’s Taylor Pendrith scored 10 birdies in an opening round of 61 to take the three-shot lead at the Shriners Children’s Open.
His flawless round puts him at 10 under par, ahead of a group of 10 players tied for second place before darkness in Las Vegas forced a stoppage of play with the last few groups still on the course.
England’s Harry Hall was among those who shot an opening 64 with three closing birdies after the only bogey of the round on his 15th hole.
A group of 10 players are one shot further back, with another nine players, including former Open champion Francesco Molinari, trailing Pendrith at five under par on a crowded leaderboard.
Tom Kim, seeking a hat trick of wins in the event, battled back from three early misses to shoot a 69 that was two under par.
Joel Dahmen, ranked 124th in the race for the top 125 and securing a full PGA Tour card for next season, suffered a major blow when he was penalized four strokes for carrying an extra club .
Dahmen discovered he had an extra four-iron on the fourth tee and received the maximum penalty for carrying more than 14 clubs.
He ultimately posted a five-over-par score of 76, putting him second to last in the field.
“I travel with 15, 16 clubs,” said Dahmen.
“I think most people out here do pending conditions and courses. I’ve been traveling here for a long time and nothing like this has ever happened.”
