The first edition of the Japan University National Boxing Championships concluded in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, with Komazawa University becoming the overall winner of the season.
Komazawa University, the Kanto University Boxing League winner, defeated Kansai League gold medalists Osaka University of Commerce to win the team final 10-1.
After the success of Kanto, Toyo University in 2023, Komazawa University returned to the top after a short break. One of the elite national coaches, Mr. Yuji Oyamada, supported Komazawa University’s success.
In the eastern part of Japan, the Kanto University Boxing League had different divisions, the male teams can fight from minimumweight to middleweight. The league was sponsored by the Kanto Boxing Federation and organized all divisional matches.
The winner of the western portion of the Kansai Boxing League this year was Osaka University of Commerce and the two champions met for a respective final in the city of Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture.
Komazawa’s Kanaya Narutome was too smart for Osaka’s Tsuji Nagahisa in the men’s minimum weight, winning the first competition of the University National Championships.
Komazawa’s Sei Oka won the featherweight (57kg) bout against Osaka’s Masanobu Takaoka, needing just two and a half minutes to stop his rival in their duel.
Komazawa’s best boxer Shota Nakayama impressed against Ren Shibata in the lightweight (60 kg) division and all five judges favored him in that contest. Sei Hiraken won the second bout in this weight class against Aito Tsuji and Komazawa University had a 7-0 lead after seven bouts.
Daigoro Marumoto was Osaka’s only winner in the university final, triumphing over Kudo Tachikawa in the light welterweight division. Maki Kawakami dominated his welterweight bout against Akihiro Furusawa and the referee stopped their unequal fight.
Komazawa’s Shun Kirikoshi was also too strong for Daisho Nimiya at light middleweight, while Haruhito Araki stopped Riku Kawamura at middleweight, making it 10-1 for her team.
The All Japan National Boxing Championships will be one of the next competitions in the country, which will host the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya in 2026.
