Here’s everything you need to know about the first round at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande.
Guerrier goes very deep
Guerrier posted his worst par round on the DP World Tour, making 10 birdies – including five straight from the second hole – for a flawless 62 to take a one-shot lead on a low-scoring day in Andalusia. After scoring 29 points thanks to seven birdies in the first nine rounds, the Frenchman hit three more down the home stretch to reach 10 under par. He said: “I felt like I was playing the front nine on PlayStation ! It was very nice. But we know golf, we know we have to stay in the present. Of course it was really nice, but I try to stay focused because we know that anything can happen with this wind.”
Brown lands two eagles
Dan Brown may have taken a while to warm up on Thursday, but when he finally did, the results were remarkable. After starting with five straight pars, the Englishman made an eagle from about 35 feet on the sixth. He then delivered a brilliant shot on the back nine, fired another eagle on the long 14th and five birdies as he found form on the greens. He said: “The round actually started a little slow, but then I made an eagle on the sixth and then I holed a few putts on the last six or seven holes on the last nine holes and had a chip-in on the 16th .” It was good. It was a good, stable day and a few putts were added towards the end.
Coussaud’s amazing ace
Ugo Coussaud made a brilliant hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth, holed with a six-iron from 175 yards.
