Andalucia Masters: Jorge Campillo leads by four shots at halftime, Jon Rahm is tied for sixth | Golf News

Jorge Campillo leads by four shots at halftime of the Estrella Damm NA Andalucia Masters, while Jon Rahm is back in contention on home soil.

Last month, Rahm appealed his outstanding fines for switching to LIV Golf to compete in DP World Tour events, competing in the Open de Espana, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and the Andalucia Masters.

His participation in the Andalucia Masters this week is his fourth DP World Tour event of the season, and he managed to go from 39th on Thursday to tied for sixth in eight under.

Home favorite Campillo has a four-shot lead after scoring an impressive 65 to keep bogeys off his card for the second year in a row.

Campillo began the day two shots off the lead after his first 64 and took the lead after just two holes on Friday thanks to a hole-out eagle from the 11th fairway. He never looked back, adding five birdies to reach 15 under and secure a commanding lead heading into the weekend.

England’s Dan Brown was Campillo’s nearest challenger at 11 under after he followed his first-round 63 with a 70 in the second round.

Jon Rahm is tied for sixth place after the second round

Rahm will be one to watch this weekend after shooting a 66 in the second round to move into a tie for sixth at eight under.

Campillo is a three-time DP World Tour winner, but none of his previous victories came in Europe and he is hoping to change that this week.

After completing his round, Campillo said from the commentary box: “It would be nice. I’ve never won in Europe, always in Africa or Asia. Yes, it would definitely be great.”

“There is still a lot to do but it would be nice to win in your home country.”

On his good start, Campillo added: “I made a good putt on 10 to save par and then the eagle on 11 was a great way to set the tone.”

“It was a tough throw, but that’s the best part of my game. I hit it perfectly and it went in the hole, which was nice.”
