The Serenissima gravel race was canceled after just one lap of racing due to wet weather that caused some parts of the track to become impassable, it is said Tuttobiciweb.it.
The 150-kilometer Italian gravel race, 65% of which is held on gravel and dirt roads, had already been shortened by one lap to 112.5 kilometers and ended after a single 37.5-kilometer lap. The race website describes the route as running 15km along the Brenta River.
According to the report, several sections of the route were impassable for support vehicles, so organizers decided to cancel the race due to safety concerns for drivers.
Race director Filippo Pozzato explained: “A river flooded near Cittadella, endangering the safety of the riders.”
“The flood had blocked the assistance wheels, among other things, so we spoke to the drivers and the teams and decided together to stop.”
There were 36 professional riders at the start, including former gravel world champion Gianni Vermeersch and his teammates Kaden Groves and Filippo Fiorelli and Filippo Magli (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè).
The race is also popular with amateur riders, who Pozzato said would be reimbursed for participation.
“As for the amateurs, we feel sorry for them and for everyone who came here from different parts of the world to race. We will refund registrations or keep them valid for next year. We apologize to everyone, but we really couldn’t do it.” “It’s not going any further,” said Pozzato.
